Abstract

Our research investigates the needs leading women to opt-out of aviation careers. Conducting problem-centered in-depth interviews with airline employees we identified primary and secondary barriers. Linking them in a systematic analysis to Maslow's Theory of Human Motivation, we find that social needs—relating to family life, motherhood, and partnership dynamics—are most central in motivating women to avoid a career as a pilot, which is primarily adapted to a male life course and everyday reality.
