History matters for international business (IB) research as it advances our understanding of IB phenomena. However, an understanding of historical research in IB is still lacking. Consequently, there have been calls for more historical research in IB, but they have so far mostly gone unheeded. The purpose of this book chapter is to enhance IB scholars’ current understanding of historical methods and challenge existing myths regarding the use of historical research in IB. We reflect on the practice of historical research in two journals, that is Journal of International Business Studies and Business History. By reflecting on these practices, our chapter offers guidance to IB scholar who wish to engage with historical research to enrich IB theories, concepts, and methods.
